It is not a recent phenomenon for item numbers to top the song charts soon after their release. The tradition has been old enough from Mehbooba mehbooba to Piya tu ab toh aaja; which left people mesemerised. At a certain point when item songs were introduced they belonged to the vamps or were mere guest appearances for some heroines till eventually when they sunk in our films to become a regular element.

Today they are a rage. Item songs are a part of almost every film that is going to release; it makes the film spicy, sensual and much popular before it hits theatres: just what is required to pull the audiences into cinema halls. As a celebration of these numbers that have made many a people dance to their tunes, let’s take a look at the 10 which will always stay etched in our memory.

If anyone can remember the film Dum today then it’s all thanks to the racy number Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo.

Debut for the Czechoslovakian beauty Yana Gupta, the entry on the bull left people dumbfounded; yes, the gorgeous snow white even pulled that off with great élan. The wolf whistles could have left many deaf or impaired. The perfectly choreographed song was indeed bold for that time. Dressed like an Indian in a traditional avatar that was twisted with a modern touch; Yana had a long queue of fans already. The lightning did strike the hearts of many men across the globe and yes, Gupta did totally go for the kill. Kudos to the debutant who created a tornado with her number and engrossing style.

5. Beedi Jalayle

When one gives Bipasha what is her forte, there’s no scope for disappointment. The song was much more than a hit. Adding the nasty flavour to the number with her expressions and body language, the lyrics seemed to have been written for her. She delved into the character brilliantly and her smoking dance moves made many fall in love with her all over again. The seriousness of the film is balanced well with this upbeat, peppy number in which the glowing Bips has spread heat like never before. The signature step was replicated by the youth in most clubs and parties. Spicy at its best, this is indeed a classic item song.

6. Kajrare Kajrare

This item number had complete thumbs up. With everything going for itself, it outnumbered all the songs that came in during its release. Aishwarya Rai was most definitely the USP of the song. Taking up an item number for the first time, the lady couldn’t have done it in a more enigmatic style. She rubbed her effect all over it. Paired with both Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, the trio got the crowds going mad. It plagued everyone with its saucy tune and from masses to the elite; everyone was spellbound with this song. The notorious facial expressions and the over the top moves of Aishwarya had several eyes popping out. The set, the feel and the entire concept sold like hot cakes. What can one say, when such great personalities make it a point to give it their sexy best then one isn’t surprised to see products like Kajrare. One can wax eloquent endlessly for this one but then I’d say go hear it instead.

7. Munni Badnaam Hui

After the evergreen song Chal Chaiyyan Chaiyyan the magic was recreated by the queen of sensuousness Malaika Arora Khan. The racy dresses and a flawless figure raised the hotness where it was too hard to handle. Expression to die for, Malaika has the natural ability to allure and capture attention. Successfully repeated, she had people going gaga over her. The phenomenal moves and the perfectly showcased twists and turns drew audiences like magnets towards her. The match up with macho man Salamn Khan further got all girls to fix their eyes at the screens. The blessed chemistry worked wonders for the song and the song was heard being hummed and danced to throughout that year.

8. Sheila Ki Jawani

The Munni effect had already left a hangover and before anyone could recover from that nausea, came in the much celebrated song Sheila Ki Jawani. Katrina Kaif who has heard immensely about her beautiful self was now replaced with newer adjectives like those of hot, glamourous, sexy and the ilk. She had outdone herself in a way that entrapped everyone in her self woven web. With the lustful and powerful moves and the enchanting expressions to go with it, it is only human to be flattered. A total energy packed performance, it showed multiple avatars of the lady to leave many awestruck. Wrapped in the sheets and sporting herself in a shirt with a hat and a tie did more than what one could have expected. Farha Khan surely understood what would work for the actress who epitomises femininity and fragility. She did some kind of an image makeover and Katrina lived up to the choreographer’s needs and expectations. The exceptional show had the nation craving for more. In fact, the song gave quite a tough competition to the previously released Munni Badnaam Hui. All for the audience’s delight, such competition is always more than welcome.

9. Chammak Challo

“Wanna be my Chammak Challo O o ooo?”- yes, that is exactly what all boys went around asking to their respective lady loves after the song created an irrefutable craze in the youngsters especially. Red hot, sparkling and sizzling away to glory, Kareena Kapoor swept everyone off their feet with her number in Ra One. The sari was worn without its front drape and that created a whole new look for the charming lady. And then who doesn’t like the King of Bollywood. Shah Rukh Khan blended in seamlessly in the song and the duo quite literally rocked the chartbusters with this number. Also to the credit of the song is the undying appeal of Akon. Singing a Hindi song wasn’t the easiest of things to do but the singer proved his mettle by making it a success the world over. His fans couldn’t have been happier to see completely different side of the man who given several hit songs in his career.

10. I Hate You Like I Love You

And who said that item numbers belonged to the ladies. Well even if some did they will be forced to change their opinion on the same after Aamir Khan’s super sensation I Hate You Like I Love You. The man had never displayed himself portraying such a character and he had all eyes to himself when he carried off this off beat character in such a fantastic way. Overgrown curly mane, bear like hairy chest and retro attire- what can one say it sounds repulsive but one had to see Aamir make all of this so fashionable. The pelvic moves could only be an icing on the cake.

As we recount these numbers, we find ourselves bursting into laughter, getting goose bumps and often being left in awe. Such is the charisma of stars. May the glory live and we witness many more songs for our jigs.
